Hamburg’s skyline glowed with more than city lights on Saturday, 9th August 2025. It was set ablaze with music, memories, and pure emotion as fans gathered for the Candle Night celebration of the late, great Ghanaian highlife icon, Daddy Lumba.
For Hamburg, this was more than just a memorial. It was a heartfelt return to his roots in spirit. The city holds a special chapter in Lumba’s story, being the stage where he made one of his first public appearance in the 1990s. Decades later, the connection remains unbreakable.
The Alter Teichweg Park became a sea of elegance and unity as hundreds dressed to impress flooded the grounds to honour a man whose music shaped generations. Lumba’s songs floated through the air like an embrace, each lyric rekindling cherished memories. His multi hits were played throughout the program, keeping the crowd on their feet and their hearts full.
The night sparkled with performances from Hamburg-based sensations De Light and Newthing, who delivered powerhouse tributes that had the crowd swaying, singing, and sometimes wiping away tears. Each note was a reminder of Lumba’s unmatched artistry and the joy he brought to hearts around the world.
The event was a masterclass in organization, spearheaded by JustEric with the solid support of Brother Theo, Kakra, Cee Poku, Susubribi, Chief Malata, Agartha Baby and Naa Adoley. Every detail was flawlessly executed, from sound to lighting, making the celebration a fitting tribute to a legend.
Such was the magnetic energy of the night that even state authorities, sensing the swelling crowds and uncontainable vibe, stepped in around 9:30 PM to bring the festivities to an official close. This was at the very moment when more fans were still streaming in to join the celebration.
Daddy Lumba, who passed on 26th July 2025, may be gone, but Hamburg proved that his legacy burns brighter than ever. With his one-week celebration scheduled for 30th August, this Candle Night was a vivid declaration: The man may rest, but his music lives on forever.
