Some individuals leave an indelible mark on society, and Mabel Preach is undoubtedly one of them. Her relentless passion and dedication to uplifting others have made her a shining light in Hamburg's cultural and social landscape. For those fortunate enough to know her, Mabel exemplifies the transformative power of creativity, empowerment, and community engagement.
For years, Mabel has been a central figure in Hamburg's art scene, making waves as a director, choreographer, curator, and cultural networker. She is the visionary behind FORMATION NOW, a festival celebrating urban BIPoC youth culture, and the leader of Lukulule, a cultural and youth association that nurtures talent and inspires young people. Her groundbreaking works, such as the critically acclaimed EMB*RACE YOUR CROWN, tackle systemic racism, neo-colonialism, and the need for alternative narratives that challenge the mainstream.
Mabel’s directorial success extends to productions like the iconic “One Day on the Soul Train”, which has cemented her reputation in Hamburg's entertainment scene. She has proudly represented the state of Hamburg as a theater expert, earning international acclaim with appearances in the United States, South Africa, Denmark, and beyond.
Born into a God fearing family, Mabel moved to Hamburg at the age of seven with her parents, Elder Antwi Opoku and Madam Joyce Opoku, who played pivotal roles in establishing the Ghana Methodist Church in Germany. Her early integration into German society was seamless, aided by her multilingual abilities.
After training as a writer and studying media communication, Mabel worked briefly in the music industry before finding her true calling—youth empowerment. She financed her education by teaching dance and drama at youth centers and has since dedicated herself to mentoring young people, particularly unaccompanied asylum seekers, through initiatives like Hajusom and Baner 16.
Her long-standing commitment to youth development is epitomized by Lukulule, a platform that discovers and nurtures talent, fostering the next generation of performers and cultural leaders.
Mabel’s latest project, the “Opera of Hope,” intertwines opera, gospel, and choral and solo performances to narrate the struggles and resilience of migrants in Germany. It tells the story of a young Black woman navigating the challenges of integration, reflecting the experiences of countless individuals who face systemic obstacles while seeking better lives.
Scheduled for performance at Kampnagel from January 16th–18th, 2025, this production promises to captivate audiences with its raw emotion and powerful storytelling.
